Mangalore |
 |
It has been an important
port on the Arabian coast for centuries. In the 14th
and 15th century, it traded with Persian and Arab merchants.
It was a Shipbuilding centre during the reigns of Hyder
Ali and his son Tipu Sultan. With Tipu's defeat by the
British in 1799, the city was incorporated as the capital
of South Kanara district. |
The modem port, 10 kms away from the
city centre is today India 's 9th largest cargo handling
zone and is the major centre for the export of cashew
nuts and coffee. The completion of a deep-water port
in 1976 coupled with the influx of large industries
including petrochemical and power plants has made this
city into a bustling metropolis and one of the fastest
growing cities of southwest. |

Hampi & Hospet |
Hampi was once the seat of
the great Vijayanagara Empire and centre of Hindu rule
for over 200 years from its foundation in 1336. It is
one of the most mesmerizing historical sites in South
India . Set in a strangely beautiful boulder strewn
landscape, the ruins of this ancient city have a magnetism
of their own and are awe-inspiring. |
Hampi is today a thriving traveler’s destination,
and most people stay at least a couple of days to, soak
in the atmosphere and explore the area. |
